Wondering what is the best waterproof drone with camera? If so, this page should help you out. It’s 2018, there are a lot of good waterproof drones that float and have follow me functionality. I have listed drones in different price ranges, so you can find one that fits your budget.
This page will cover drones that are designed to be fully waterproof, not just water resistant or splash proof. I will cover the difference on the bottom of the page
SwellPro Splash 3 Drone
The Splash Drone 3 is a fully waterproof drone with a 4k camera. The Splash 3 floats, so if you decide to land it in the ocean or another body of water, you can still control the camera and get an awesome first person underwater view. The drone comes with a 4k camera, a 2-axis gimbal, FPV controller, landing gear, carrying case, battery, charger, and propellers. The Splash 3 also has a built in GPS, allowing you to easily track the drone and use the return to home function. It also has a lot of other cool functions like follow me, mission planning, auto land, tap to fly, and low battery notifications.
Although the Swellpro 3 might not be the best drone for everyday use on the market, it definitely has its niche in the drone world. The Splashpro 3 is a great amphibious drone for fishing, boating, capturing aerial shots around/over water, or just to use as an all-weather drone. It also has a very unique release mechanism I will talk about next.
Payload Release Mechanism
The splash 3 has a unique payload release mechanism. The quadcopter is capable of carrying an additional 1kg of weight and dropping it using the release function on the controller. This makes it a great drone for carrying fishing bait or other items.
The QuadH20 company is one of the best known waterproof drone manufactures out there. The body of the QuadH20 drone is made of an epoxy composite that is strong, rigid, and water tight. If you are someone who likes to build, this drone is an excellent choice for you. Once you get the body, you can complete the drone with your own camera, motors, and other components. You can see the recommended components on the QuadH20 website here. They also have several complete units for sale, but they are quite expensive. I will put them at the bottom of this list.back to menu ↑
JJRC H31 Quadcopter
The JJRC H31 is an inexpensive waterproof quadcopter that takes pretty clear photos and videos through its 2MP HD camera. It is more of a beginner/toy drone, as it only as a remote-control distance of about 75 meters and a flight time of around 9 minutes. If you’re looking for a professional waterproof drone this is definitely not the best quadcopter on the list. But, if you’re looking for a fun drone to fly while boating, around a body of water, or to give as a gift the JJRC H31 is a good choice. The H31 handles nicely and can do aerobatic stunts. The frame of the drone is extremely durable.
Goolsky Q353 Triphibian
The Goolsky Q353 is another toy quadcopter that doesn’t have a camera. Although there is no camera, it is still fully waterproof amphibious drone. The quadcopter has headless mode, which means it automatically orients to the direction of the remote controller. This is an excellent feature for new flyers. Another notable feature of the Q353 is that that even when it lands in the water upside down it can roll back to its proper position. It has LED lights for night flight. It has an estimated flight time of about 6-7 minutes and a controllable range of about 150 meters. The quadcopter comes with 4 spare propellers, a battery, charger, and more.
HexH20 Pro V2 Camera Drone
For most of us, the HexH20 is something we will only dream about. Coming in at a price point of over 6000 dollars the HeckH20 Pro V2 is an absolute monster of a drone. This all-weather drone flies in the rain, snow, and just like the other drones on this list it can land in water. This powerful hexacopter can carry up to 2kg. With a 3 axis gimbal and DJI X3 camera you’ll be able to shoot super clear and stable 4k video at 30 frames per second, or take 12MP still mages. It is equipped with DJI Lightbridge technology that allows the operator to stream HD video in 1080p or 720 when using payload release. With a long range of 2.17 miles (3.5km) and a battery life of 30 minutes you can see why this drone comes with a hefty price tag. You can read more about this hexacopter on the SwellPro website here.
Waterproof vs. Water Resistant
Water Resistant is a low level of protection that implies the device is made in a way that water does not easily get inside it. In some cases, water resistant devices are coated with a substance that reduces the chance for water to get inside and/or damage sensitive parts.
Most people understand want waterproof means. The term waterproof implies the device is cable of being fully exposed to water and water will not cause damage to the product. Using the term waterproof is a big claim for a company to make, especially with drones because there are so many small and intricate electrical components.
Are DJI Drones Waterproof?
Short answer is no. I see a lot of threads online with people asking how waterproof DJI drones are. Although a lot of people say they fly their Phantom drones in the rain without any problems, it’s generally not advised, nor are the current Phantom drones designed to be truly waterproof or even water resistant. I did see a video of a guy who lost his DJI Mavic in a river. Later that day he found his drone and dried it off and it still worked. This is a testament to the quality of DJI products but I would not count on a DJI drone to continue to work if it crashes in the water.
