The Camera

The Syma x5uw quadcopter comes standard with an FPV camera, meaning it is capable of streaming live video right to your smartphone or other device. All images and videos are stored on a micro SD card, which unfortunately does not come with the quadcopter. The camera is removable, so if you are just trying to learn how to fly, you might want to remove it, as it will increase battery life.

The Controller

Syma x5uw ControllerThe controller has a new and improved design.

The design is a lot simpler, but it does take some getting use to if you are use to other Syma products.

The drone is a little harder to trim if you notice the quadcopter drifting in one direction (rarely happens).

You can also trim the craft from the live display from the app if you plan on using the quadcopters live streaming capabilities.

The control also has a flip button located on the top right of the controller.

Start recording video or take a picture by pressing the buttons located on the top left of the controller.

If for some reason you don’t like the controller, you can use the Syma GO application and control the drone using your smartphone.

The Battery

The x5uw has a new battery design. There is a separate compartment built into the craft which the battery fits into, so if you have extra batteries laying around from older models, you won’t be able to use them. The battery inside is a 500 mAh 3.7v LiPo. It takes about 2 hours to charge from completely dead to full. Syma does sell a charging station, so you can charge up to 3 barriers at a time. With the prop guards removed you can expect about 8 minutes of flight time, with the prop guards on expect a little less.

Other Cool Features

Easily calibrate that quadcopter by moving both control sticks down and to the right. Easily change the power settings by pushing in the right stick, you will hear it beep once for low power mode, press it in again and it will beep twice for high power. If you press it in and hold it, the quadcopter will switch to headless mode, which is great for beginners because it orients the drone to the direction of the controller, rather than the nose of the drone. Another way to think about it is forward on the throttle will always be forward and backward will always be backwards, regardless if the drone is facing you or not.

This quadcopter has auto takeoff, auto landing, and can easily do flips.

The LED lights (green in the back orange in the front) make the x5uw easy to orient at night. The lights will begin to flash when the battery is low.

The on-screen display from the Syma Go app is very cool. You can draw a flight path on the screen of your smartphone for the quadcopter to travel, all you have to do is sit back and watch. You can also take pictures by pressing the camera icon on your smartphone or begin recording by pressing the video icon.

The quadcopters “extra tough casing” is made of a ABS plastic, which is resistant to corrosion and water.
